Transformation of a Complex Excel Spread Sheet App to Modern Web Based App using ASP.Net

Legacy Modernization, or Software application modernization, refers to the conversion, rewriting or porting of a legacy system to a modern computer programming language, software libraries, protocols, or hardware platform. Legacy transformation aims to retain and extend the value of the legacy investment through migration to new platforms.
In the past couple of years, we have had several opportunities wherein we have engaged and worked with many of our clients across industries to briefly review the well-known risks, weaknesses and limitations of legacy application and provide solutions for Legacy Application modernization.
In this document we showcase our client example of the imperatives behind such legacy application modernization solution proposition and tangible benefits derived to our customers.
Our customer is an Independent Financial Research provider. The organization has large portfolios of Corporate Assets. The data pertaining to these assets were maintained in Excel Automation application with Financial Modeling, Automated Financial Systems Charts, Dash boards, Financials and Statistics using Microsoft Excel and Visual Basic Application (VBA).
CHALLENGE
Our Customer was using legacy spreadsheet application to show the histories of economic profit and wealth creation on over 15,000 global companies. Over time, local process modifications added to the complexity, leading to a large monolithic legacy application.  Where data access and business logic were mixed up, lack of data accuracy, reliability of the reports documentation, change in versions of spread sheet and the dependency on spread sheet increased Interim’s risk and maintenance cost.
  • Spread sheet reports were fraught with errors, a huge compliance problem when reports are required to reflect accurate histories of economic profit of all companies.
  • Limited resources with specialized skill sets.

The challenge was to change/modernization of the large legacy spread sheet application to a centralized reporting and analysis Web application.
SOLUTION
A web based solution was developed to perform all spread sheet functionality, to address the end user requirement for Excel interactivity while giving IT control and manageability over enterprise data.
The data warehouse was also developed with the help of a centralized data that catered to implement the business rules specific to the market without any code changes.
